Quick answer
The Citi Custom Cash is the best no-annual-fee card for anyone with one dominant spending category. It earns 5% cash back automatically on your top eligible spend category each billing cycle (up to $500 in that category), then 1% on everything else. The 5% rotates with your spending — no activation required, no choosing in advance. Eligible categories include restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, select travel, transit, streaming, drugstores, home improvement, fitness clubs, and live entertainment.
TL;DR: The Citi Custom Cash Card is a no-annual-fee cash back credit card that automatically earns 5% back on your highest-spend eligible category each billing cycle (up to $500 per billing cycle, then 1%). Eligible categories: restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, select travel, transit, streaming services, drugstores, home improvement stores, fitness clubs, and live entertainment. Earns 1% on all other purchases. Rewards are issued as Citi ThankYou points (100 TY = $1) convertible to cash or — when combined with a premium Citi card — to airline miles and hotel points.

The 10 eligible categories
5% applies to whichever of these 10 categories you spend most in during a billing cycle:
- Restaurants — dining in, takeout, delivery, fast food
- Gas stations — all U.S. gas stations (not warehouse clubs)
- Grocery stores — U.S. supermarkets (not warehouse clubs, not Target/Walmart)
- Select travel — hotels, car rentals, attractions (not flights, not cruises)
- Transit — trains, buses, taxis, rideshares, ferries, parking, tolls
- Streaming — Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Spotify, Apple TV+, and others
- Drugstores — CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid
- Home improvement stores — Home Depot, Lowe's
- Fitness clubs — gym memberships, fitness clubs, recreation facilities
- Live entertainment — concerts, sports events, theater, amusement parks
How the automatic 5% works
At the end of each billing cycle, Citi looks at your spending across all 10 eligible categories. Whichever had the highest spend gets the 5% rate — automatically, with no action required from you.
Example:
- Restaurant spending: $280
- Gas stations: $120
- Grocery stores: $450
- Streaming: $45
- All other: $800
Result: Grocery stores wins with $450 → 5% on $450 = $22.50 in bonus cash back. (If groceries were $520, you'd earn 5% on $500 cap = $25, plus 1% on the remaining $20 = $0.20.)
The $500 cap per billing cycle matters. At exactly $500 in your top category, you max out the 5% earning at $25 per month — or $300 per year in bonus cash back from the top category alone.
ThankYou points vs cash back: the upgrade path
The Custom Cash earns ThankYou points (100 TY = $1 cash back). When used alone, TY points are worth exactly 1¢ each.
The upgrade: If you also hold the Strata Premier (annual fee $95), you can pool your Custom Cash TY points with Strata Premier's TY points and transfer them to airline partners at 1:1, as explained in the Citi ThankYou program guide. This turns your 5% "cash back" into 5x airline miles — which is extraordinary for a no-fee card.
This is the core mechanic of the Citi Trifecta strategy.
Best use cases
Solo use (no Strata Premier):
- Best no-fee 5% card for your single largest spend category
- Use it for gas ($500/month × 5% = $300/year back)
- Or restaurants (avid diner spending $500/month → $300/year back)
- Or streaming + primary grocery card, if a grocery rewards card isn't capping at $6K
Paired with Strata Premier:
- 5x ThankYou miles on your top category (effectively)
- Stack with Strata Premier's 3x on groceries, dining, flights, gas
- Custom Cash beats Strata Premier only on your #1 category; Strata Premier beats it on everything else
In the full Citi Trifecta:
- Custom Cash: 5x on your #1 category
- Strata Premier: 3x on dining, flights, hotels, groceries, gas, EV charging
- Double Cash: 2x (as Citi's base earn card for all other spend)
What the Custom Cash doesn't do
- No foreign transaction fee waiver — 3% fee on international purchases, so don't use it abroad
- $500 cap means this isn't a max-value grocery card — a card with unlimited 3% on groceries will eventually beat it at very high spend levels
- Only one category gets 5% — if you split spend evenly across categories, this card is a poor fit; get the Strata Premier instead for 3x everywhere
- Doesn't earn 5% on flights — flights are not among the 10 categories; use Strata Premier's 3x for flight bookings
Welcome offer value
The $200 welcome offer requires $1,500 spend in 6 months — very achievable. At 5% on your top category plus the $200 bonus, first-year value is typically:
- $200 bonus
-
- $150–$300 in annual 5% category rewards
- = $350–$500 first-year value on a no-fee card
Custom Cash vs Discover it Cash Back
The main competitor is the Discover it Cash Back (5% rotating quarterly categories, $1,500/quarter cap); for a head-to-head with the Chase Freedom Flex see our Custom Cash vs Chase Freedom Flex comparison. Key differences:
- Custom Cash: automatic category, no activation
- Discover it: manual activation required each quarter, announced categories may not match your spending
- Custom Cash: 10 fixed categories; Discover it: 4 rotating categories (groceries, restaurants, Amazon, gas, etc.)
- Discover it: 5% on $1,500/quarter = $75 max; Custom Cash: 5% on $500/month × 12 = $300 max per year
For most people, Custom Cash wins because the automatic selection removes cognitive load.
Bottom line
The Citi Custom Cash Card is the simplest, most powerful no-annual-fee card for someone with a clear #1 spending category — see how it stacks up in our best Citi credit cards roundup. It handles itself — you never have to activate, choose, or remember what's earning 5%. Pair it with the Citi Strata Premier to turn that 5% into transferable airline miles, and you have one of the most efficient earning setups in the entire points world at a combined $95 annual fee. The Citi Double Cash rounds out the trio as the 2x catch-all for non-category spend.
