American Express credit cards — 2026 guide

The premium-perks issuer — Centurion Lounges, FHR hotel credits, 21+ transfer partners. Best for travelers willing to pay for credits.

Quick Answer

American Express issues the deepest transferable-points programme in the US market (Membership Rewards, 21+ partners as of 2026) plus the strongest premium-travel benefits stack (Centurion Lounges, $200 Fine Hotels & Resorts credit, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit). The trade-off is high annual fees ($395–$695 for the marquee cards) that only break even if you actively use the statement credits.

What American Express wins on

  • Centurion Lounge network (Amex Plat / Biz Plat / Hilton Aspire) — best owned-lounge network worldwide.
  • Membership Rewards transfers to 21+ programs including ANA, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, Aer Lingus, ITA Airways.
  • Pop-up Resy reservations, Amex Offers (statement credits at major merchants), and historically deep welcome bonuses.
  • Cell phone protection on most personal Platinum / Gold / Green tier cards (2024+).

The trade-offs

  • Once-per-lifetime welcome bonus rule per card variant — you only get the SUB once.
  • No 1:1 Hyatt transfer — Hyatt only partners with Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards.
  • Acceptance still weaker than Visa / Mastercard, especially overseas and at small merchants.
  • Annual fees stacked with statement credits that require active management to fully realise.

Frequently asked questions about American Express

Which Amex card has the best welcome bonus right now?

Welcome bonus values shift monthly. Use our Compare hub to see the live SUB value (estimated cash value, not headline points) on every active Amex card — Platinum, Gold, Green, Business Platinum, Business Gold, Hilton Aspire, and the Delta line all rotate.

Does Amex have a 5/24 rule like Chase?

No. Amex uses a "1 in 5" velocity check (no more than 1 new Amex card every 5 days, and ~5 total in 90 days) but doesn't penalise cards from other issuers. The harder constraint is the once-per-lifetime welcome bonus per card variant.

Are the Platinum credits worth the $695 annual fee?

For year-one math: welcome bonus (~$1,500 cash value) plus credits that most travellers will realise ($200 hotel + $200 airline + $200 Uber + $300 Equinox + $189 CLEAR + $155 Walmart+ = ~$1,244 of theoretical credits) make year one a clear win. For year two onward, it depends on whether you actually use the Uber, Equinox, and CLEAR credits. Use our Annual Fee Calculator with your actual habits.

Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve — which one wins?

See our full side-by-side at /compare/amex-platinum-vs-chase-sapphire-reserve. Short version: Plat wins on lounges (Centurion network) and luxury hotel credits; CSR wins on dining multipliers, the $300 flexible travel credit, and the 1:1 Hyatt transfer.

Can I have multiple Amex cards at the same time?

Yes. Amex lets you hold up to 5 charge cards (Plat / Gold / Green / Biz Plat / Biz Gold) and up to 5 credit cards simultaneously. Most points optimisers run a 2–3 card Amex stack: Plat for credits + lounges, Gold for 4× dining/groceries, and a Biz card for category bonuses on business spend.

Does Amex Membership Rewards transfer to Hyatt?

No. As of 2026 World of Hyatt only takes 1:1 transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards (plus its own co-brand card). Amex MR points cannot reach Hyatt without first moving them to a non-Hyatt programme — which always costs cents-per-point value. If Hyatt redemptions are your primary value lever, add a Chase Sapphire or Bilt card alongside any Amex stack.
