Quick answer
The Capital One Venture X wins for most travelers — at $395/year, it effectively costs ~$95 after the $300 Capital One Travel credit, but adds lounge access, 10,000 annual bonus miles, and 5x on flights. For a full deep-dive on the Venture X alone, see the Capital One Venture X review. The Venture ($95/year) is the better pick only if you don't use the $300 travel credit or want to avoid thinking about the travel portal. For anyone spending $300+/year on travel, the Venture X delivers more value.
TL;DR: Capital One Venture earns 2x miles on all purchases, $95/year. Capital One Venture X earns 2x miles on all purchases, 5x on flights through Capital One Travel, 10x on hotels/car rentals; $395/year minus $300 travel credit = $95 effective cost. Venture X adds Capital One lounge access, Priority Pass, 10,000 annual bonus miles (= $100), Global Entry credit.

When the Venture X clearly wins
1. You use Capital One Travel for $300+ in bookings
The $300 travel credit applies to any Capital One Travel portal booking (flights, hotels, car rentals). If you book even two round-trip flights through the portal per year, you'll likely hit $300.
Critical: Capital One Travel prices are often comparable to direct booking. You don't sacrifice much to use it, and you get the 5x earn rate (vs 2x direct).
2. You use airport lounges
The Venture X includes:
- Capital One Lounges at DFW (Terminal E), DEN, IAD — premium lounges with hot food, cocktails, showers
- Priority Pass with 1,300+ airport lounges globally
- Access for up to 2 guests
Even occasional loungeuse changes the calculus. One Priority Pass lounge visit at $35+ justifies upgrading.
3. You want 10,000 annual bonus miles
Every account anniversary, Venture X awards 10,000 bonus miles (worth ~$100 as travel). This alone offsets $100 of the $395 fee, making the net fee $295 — and with $300 travel credit, net effective cost = -$5 (the card pays you to hold it).
4. You're adding authorized users
Venture X includes 4 free authorized users who get full lounge access (Capital One + Priority Pass). That's enormous value for couples or families — each authorized user effectively gets their own $300+/year lounge access for free.
When the Venture is good enough
1. You don't use the $300 Capital One Travel credit
If your travel booking behavior is entirely through airline direct, hotel chains, or other OTAs, and you'd never switch to Capital One Travel, then the $300 credit effectively doesn't exist — and the Venture's $95 fee is truly cheaper.
Counterargument: Car rentals, one-way flights, and hotel stays often get best prices in Capital One Travel. It's worth trying before concluding you can't use the credit.
2. You don't want to pay $395 upfront
Even if Venture X is better value, some people find $395 upfront psychologically difficult (even knowing they'll recoup $300). If that friction matters, stick with the Venture.
The math for an average traveler

Transfer partners: Same on both cards
Both the Venture and Venture X transfer to identical partners at identical rates — see our Capital One Miles program guide for how to maximize each one:

| Flying Blue (Air France/KLM) | 1:1.5 |
| Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles | 1:1 |

| British Airways Avios | 1:1 |
| Singapore Airlines | 1:1 |

Our recommendation
Get Venture X if: You travel at least once per year and will book $300 in flights/hotels/cars through Capital One Travel (not a high bar). If you already hold the Venture X and are reconsidering, our guide on whether to keep or cancel the Venture X covers the decision in detail.
Stick with Venture if: You categorically won't use a travel portal, or you're risk-averse about the higher upfront fee. See the full Capital One Venture review for everything the base card offers.
Skip both if: You want hotel chain status (Capital One doesn't provide it) or need Hyatt/Marriott/IHG transfer flexibility → look at Chase Sapphire Preferred/Reserve instead. If you're thinking of stepping down from the Venture X rather than canceling, see our guide on downgrading the Venture X to the Venture.
