The Capital One Venture X costs $395/year. If the $300 Capital One Travel portal credit isn't working for you — either because you don't book through the portal or because the portal rates don't compete with direct booking — downgrading to the standard Venture ($95) preserves your miles, account history, and transfer partners while saving $300/yr.

Why downgrade instead of cancel?

  1. Miles stay alive: Your Capital One miles balance carries over to the Venture. Cancel all Capital One miles-earning cards and your miles expire within 30 days.
  2. Account history preserved: The account continues on your credit report — same age, same credit line.
  3. Re-upgrade path: You can request an upgrade back to the Venture X later without reapplying.

Venture X vs. Venture: what changes

FeatureVenture X ($395)Venture ($95)
Annual fee$395$95
$300 Capital One Travel credit✅ (portal only)
10,000 anniversary bonus miles✅ ($100 value)
Priority Pass Select✅ (unlimited)
Authorized user lounge access✅ ($0/AU)
10x on hotels/cars (portal)
5x on flights (portal)
2x on all purchases✅ (2x on all)
Transfer partners (15+)✅ (same partners)

The key preservation: The Venture keeps 2x on all purchases and access to all Capital One transfer partners. The earn rate and travel partner ecosystem don't change. What you lose is the portal credit, lounge access, and the anniversary miles.

The savings math

  • Venture X fee: $395
  • Venture fee: $95
  • Annual savings: $300

On the Venture X, the $300 Capital One Travel credit + $100 anniversary miles theoretically offset the entire fee. But if you're not using the portal credit (the most common reason to downgrade), you're paying $395 for Priority Pass and anniversary miles — worth roughly $100-$150/yr for occasional lounge users. The Venture's $95 fee with 2x on everything is a cleaner value proposition.

What you keep after downgrading to the Venture

Preserved:

  • Full Capital One miles balance
  • Account age and credit history
  • 2x on all purchases (same earn rate on everyday spend)
  • Access to all 15+ Capital One transfer partners (Air Canada Aeroplan, Turkish Miles & Smiles, Wyndham, Accor, etc.)
  • Capital One Travel portal access (just no portal credit)

Lost immediately:

  • Priority Pass Select (Venture X-exclusive)
  • $300 Capital One Travel credit
  • 10,000 anniversary bonus miles ($100 value)
  • 10x/5x earn rates in Capital One Travel portal
  • Authorized user Priority Pass cards
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit

How to request the product change

Call Capital One at 1-800-CAPITAL (1-800-227-4825) or the number on the back of your Venture X card.

Request a "product change" to the Capital One Venture ($95/yr). The rep will:

  1. Confirm you've held the Venture X for 12+ months (required)
  2. Explain what changes
  3. Process the downgrade

The new Venture card arrives within 7-10 business days. Your Venture X card stops working when the Venture activates.

Alternative: Some Venture X holders have been able to request product changes via the Capital One app or online chat under Account Services → Card Management. If available, this is faster. But not all product changes are available through digital channels.

Fee proration

Capital One prorates the annual fee on product changes. If you paid $395 and downgrade 4 months in, expect roughly a $263 credit (8/12 × $395). Timing tip: downgrade within 30-60 days of your annual fee posting to maximize the prorated refund.

Pro tips before downgrading

1. Use your Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit first. Capital One Venture X provides a $120 Global Entry or $85 TSA PreCheck credit every 4 years. If yours is due for renewal, apply before downgrading. The Venture doesn't have this benefit.

2. Verify your miles balance carries over. Your miles balance should transfer automatically. Confirm the balance in the Capital One app or portal immediately after the product change.

3. Consider timing around your anniversary miles. The 10,000 bonus miles post on your account anniversary. If your anniversary is in the next 1-2 months, wait until after they post before downgrading to capture the $100 in miles you've already paid for.

4. Keep at least one Capital One travel card active. If you downgrade to the Venture but then close that card too, your miles would be at risk. The Venture has a $95/yr fee — if you want to go no-fee, consider the VentureOne instead (1.25x on everything, $0 fee, miles stay active).

Alternatives to downgrading

If your objection to the Venture X is specifically the portal requirement on the $300 credit, consider whether these changes make the card work:

  • Book a few flights through Capital One Travel: The portal is reasonably competitive on airfare. If you're avoiding the portal for hotels (to keep hotel loyalty points), airfare alone may clear $300.
  • Check if the Venture X has a retention offer: Call Capital One and mention you're considering downgrading. Retention offers (bonus miles, fee waiver, statement credit) are uncommon on the Venture X but worth a 5-minute call.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Capital One miles if I downgrade the Venture X to Venture?

No. Your Capital One miles carry over intact to the Venture. Both cards earn the same Capital One miles currency, which transfers to the same 15+ airline and hotel partners. Miles are only at risk if you cancel ALL Capital One miles-earning cards.

Can I upgrade back to the Venture X after downgrading?

Yes. After holding the Venture for 12+ months, you can call Capital One and request an upgrade back to the Venture X. This is a product change — no new application, no hard credit pull. You won't earn a new Venture X welcome bonus on the upgrade (that's governed by new-card applications only).

Do authorized users lose lounge access immediately after the Venture X downgrade?

Yes. Priority Pass access for all cardholders (primary and authorized users) ends immediately when the product change processes. The Venture does not carry Priority Pass. If you have travel coming up through airports with Priority Pass lounges, time your downgrade after those trips.
