Best Hotels in Puerto Rico on Points 2026: Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham, and Choice Compared
The best value hotel in Puerto Rico on points is the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve at 17,000-23,000 World of Hyatt points a night against $375-$800 cash, about 2.5-3 cents a point; the Hyatt Place San Juan (9,000-15,000, free breakfast) is the best city base and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar (30,000 flat) the best non-Hyatt resort. Luxury runs through Marriott — the St. Regis Bahia Beach at 82,000-140,000 and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, at 180,500-233,000 — while the Condado Marriotts and the Caribe Hilton return about a cent a point and are best booked with free-night certificates.

Puerto Rico is the rare beach destination where every major hotel program has a real property — Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham, and Choice all price nights on the island — and where the value spread between them is enormous. The same $500 beachfront night costs 20,000 points at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, about 60,000 at the Marriott properties in Condado, and 70,000-plus at the Caribe Hilton. Below: eleven hotels with current points and cash ranges, the value each returns, which free-night certificates fit, and which card earns the currency.
Quick answer
The best value on the island is the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve at 17,000-23,000 World of Hyatt points a night against $375-$800 cash (2.5-3 cents a point), followed by the Hyatt Place San Juan at 9,000-15,000 for a city base and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar at a flat 30,000 Wyndham points near El Yunque. The luxury tier is Marriott: the St. Regis Bahia Beach at 82,000-140,000 points and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, at 180,500-233,000. Hilton's Caribe Hilton (70,000-75,000) and Hilton Ponce (55,000) are fair with a fifth-night-free stay or a free-night certificate, weak otherwise. Earn the currency with the World of Hyatt, a Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve transferring to Hyatt, a Bonvoy Boundless or Bonvoy Brilliant, or a Hilton Surpass or Hilton Aspire.
- Best value: Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve — 20,000 standard, about 2.75 cents a point
- Best city base: Hyatt Place San Juan — 9,000-15,000, breakfast included
- Best luxury on points: St. Regis Bahia Beach — 82,000-140,000 Marriott, an Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts property too
- Best with a free-night certificate: Caribe Hilton (Hilton cert) or San Juan Marriott and La Concha (Marriott 85,000 cert)
- Best fixed price: Wyndham Grand Rio Mar — 30,000 flat
💡 Pro tip — Award nights at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve and at most Marriott and Hilton properties waive the resort fee, which runs $50-$75 a night in Puerto Rico. On a two-night stay that is $100-$150 the cash rate would have added — count it when you compare.

| Condado Vanderbilt | Choice Privileges | 59,000 | $325-$1,250 | 1.0-1.3 | Condado | Historic luxury, no resort chain feel |

| Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino | Hilton Honors | 55,000 | $240-$800 | 0.8 | Ponce, south coast, 2 hours from SJU | Golf, casino, off-the-beaten-path |
Key takeaway: Hyatt returns two to three times the value per point of Marriott and Hilton on the island, and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar's flat 30,000 is the best non-Hyatt rate.

Beach resort for a family
The Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is the answer at 20,000 points a night standard. It is large — 579 rooms, ten restaurants, two golf courses, a lagoon pool — and 40 minutes from the airport. Our own Puerto Rico trip used it for two nights at 40,000 points against about $1,000 cash. The Wyndham Grand Rio Mar next door is the alternative at a flat 30,000 Wyndham points, which a Wyndham Business holder can reach quickly, and it sits closer to El Yunque.
City beach with dinner walkable
Condado is the neighborhood: the San Juan Marriott (44,000-74,000), La Concha (46,000-60,000), and the Condado Vanderbilt (59,000 Choice) all sit on the same strip. The Marriott points value is poor at about 1 cent, so these are best booked with an 85,000-point free-night certificate from a Bonvoy Boundless or Bonvoy Brilliant, or on cash with a card that earns well on hotels. The Caribe Hilton is a ten-minute drive west and works the same way with a Hilton free-night certificate.
Luxury
Two Marriott properties define the top: the St. Regis Bahia Beach (82,000-140,000) and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve (180,500-233,000). Both return 1.2-2 cents a point, which is respectable for rooms that cost $750-$5,300 in cash, and both are Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts properties, so an Amex Platinum holder can weigh a paid FHR stay with the $600 hotel credit and the FHR perks against a points stay. Marriott's fifth-night-free rule makes a five-night St. Regis stay 328,000-560,000 points rather than 410,000-700,000.
Budget or a one-night airport stop
The Hyatt Place San Juan at 9,000-15,000 points with free breakfast, twelve minutes from the airport, is the best cheap night on the island. The Hilton Ponce at 55,000 is the wrong currency for a budget stay but the only points option on the south coast.
Free-night certificates: what fits where
| Certificate | Source | Covers on the island |
|---|---|---|
| Hyatt Category 1-4 free night | World of Hyatt anniversary | Hyatt Place San Juan; not the Grand Reserve (Category 5) |
| Hyatt Category 1-7 free night | Hyatt milestone rewards | Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve and Hacienda del Mar |
| Marriott 35,000-point certificate | Bonvoy Boundless anniversary | Nothing on the island at standard pricing; topping up with 15,000 points reaches the Marriott or La Concha on low dates |
| Marriott 85,000-point certificate | Bonvoy Brilliant anniversary | San Juan Marriott, La Concha, and the St. Regis on its cheapest dates |
| Hilton free night | Hilton Aspire and Hilton Surpass (after spending) | Caribe Hilton and Hilton Ponce, standard rooms |
Real use case: four nights, three programs
A couple with 60,000 Ultimate Rewards, an 85,000-point Marriott certificate, and a Hilton free night plans four nights.
- Nights 1-2: Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, 40,000 Ultimate Rewards transferred to Hyatt at 1:1 from a Sapphire Reserve — about $1,000 of room, resort fee waived.
- Night 3: San Juan Marriott on the 85,000 certificate — about $450 of room the couple would not have paid in points at 1 cent each.
- Night 4: Caribe Hilton on the Hilton free night — about $400 of room, a ten-minute drive from Old San Juan for the last day.
Four nights, about $1,850 of hotel, for 40,000 points and two certificates that were expiring anyway, with 20,000 Ultimate Rewards left over. The certificates did the work Marriott and Hilton points do poorly here, and the Hyatt points did the work they do best.
Decision framework
| You want... | Book |
|---|---|
| The best value per point | Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve or Hyatt Place San Juan |
| A beach resort without Hyatt points | Wyndham Grand Rio Mar, 30,000 flat |
| Condado nightlife and a city beach | San Juan Marriott or La Concha on an 85,000 certificate; Caribe Hilton on a Hilton free night |
| Luxury | St. Regis Bahia Beach on points (fifth night free) or via Amex FHR on cash |
| The most exclusive stay on the island | Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve — budget 200,000-plus points a night |
| A cheap night near the airport | Hyatt Place San Juan |
Common mistakes
- Spending Marriott or Hilton points at 1 cent when a certificate would do. Both programs' points are weak on the island; their certificates are strong.
- Booking the Hyatt on a peak date. 23,000 instead of 20,000 — check the calendar.
- Ignoring the resort fee on cash rates. $50-$75 a night that award stays waive.
- Forgetting the fifth night free at Marriott and Hilton. A five-night St. Regis stay costs four nights' points.
- Assuming the Category 1-4 Hyatt certificate covers the Grand Reserve. It is Category 5; only the 1-7 certificate does.
- Staying in Condado and expecting a resort. The Condado hotels are city-beach properties; the resorts are 40 minutes east in Rio Grande or 40 minutes west in Dorado.
Editor's take
Puerto Rico is where the hotel programs show their true colors. Hyatt prices its two properties honestly and returns 2.5-3 cents a point; Marriott and Hilton price theirs dynamically and return a cent, with their certificates the only way to book well; Wyndham's flat 30,000 is the quiet bargain. Our reading: transfer Chase points to Hyatt for the Grand Reserve, spend Marriott and Hilton certificates in Condado, and save the St. Regis and Dorado Beach for a stay where the fifth-night-free rule or the Amex hotel credit does the heavy lifting.
