You've decided the Amex Platinum's $895 annual fee isn't working for you anymore. Before you cancel, there's a better option: downgrade (product-change) to the Amex Gold ($325) or Amex Green ($150). You keep your account history, your credit line, and your Membership Rewards points. This guide walks through exactly how to do it.
Downgrading is almost always preferable to canceling for three reasons: it preserves your account age (which affects your credit score), it keeps your Amex MR points from expiring, and it gives you a path back to the Platinum later if your travel patterns change.
What is a product change (downgrade)?
A product change is Amex's term for switching from one card to another within the same product family without closing your account. From the credit bureau's perspective, your account continues — same account age, same credit line, same payment history. What changes is the card's benefits and annual fee.
Important: You must hold the Platinum for at least 12 months before requesting a product change. Amex will not allow product changes on cards under 12 months old.
Downgrade options from the Amex Platinum
| Target card | Annual fee | Best if you... |
|---|---|---|
| Amex Gold | $325 | Spend heavily on dining (4x) and groceries (4x); want $240 in credits |
| Amex Green | $150 | Travel occasionally, want transit credits and 3x on travel/dining |
| Amex EveryDay Preferred | $95 | Want MR points without premium benefits; 3x at supermarkets |
| Amex EveryDay | $0 | Want zero annual fee while keeping MR points active |
You CANNOT downgrade to:
- Any cashback card (Blue Cash Everyday, Blue Cash Preferred) — separate product family
- Any co-branded card (Delta, Hilton, Marriott) — separate product family
- Any business card from a personal card — not permitted
What you keep after downgrading to Amex Gold
✅ Preserved:
- Account age and credit history (the account continues)
- Credit line (same limit unless Amex adjusts it)
- All existing Membership Rewards points (no forfeiture)
- Access to Amex customer service and app features
- Amex purchase protection on new purchases (Gold limits apply)
❌ Lost immediately upon downgrade:
- Centurion Lounge access (Platinum-exclusive)
- Priority Pass membership
- $200 airline fee credit
- $200 Fine Hotels + Resorts credit
- $200 Uber Cash (Gold gets $120 Uber Cash instead)
- $240 digital entertainment credit
- $155 Walmart+ credit
- $300 Equinox credit
- Hotel Collection booking credit (Gold gets its own, smaller version)
- Platinum Concierge
- 5x on flights booked directly (Gold gets 3x on flights)
- Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit (Pro tip: use this before downgrading)
Gained on Amex Gold:
- 4x at restaurants worldwide
- 4x at US supermarkets (up to $25k/yr)
- $120 dining credit ($10/month: Grubhub, Cheesecake Factory, Five Guys, etc.)
- $120 Uber Cash ($10/month)
- Hotel Collection: $100 credit on 2-night+ stays
What you keep after downgrading to Amex Green
✅ Preserved (same as above): Account history, credit line, MR points.
❌ Lost: Everything lost in the Gold downgrade, PLUS the Gold's 4x dining/grocery.
Gained on Amex Green:
- 3x on travel (broadly defined — airlines, hotels, transit, Airbnb, etc.)
- 3x on dining
- 3x on transit (subway, Uber, Lyft, parking, tolls)
- $100 LoungeBuddy credit (lounge day passes — not Centurion, but access to 2,200+ paid lounges)
- $100 CLEAR+ credit (CLEAR biometric security)
The Green is the better choice if you travel occasionally but don't dine out or grocery shop enough to maximize the Gold's 4x.
How to request a product change
Option 1 (fastest): Call the number on the back of your card. Ask for a "product change" to the Amex Gold or Amex Green. The rep will confirm eligibility (12+ months on current card), explain what you'll gain and lose, and process the change. The new card arrives in 7-10 business days. Your old card stops working when the new one activates.
Option 2: Amex app or online chat. Log into your Amex account → Account Services → Card Management → "Upgrade or change my card." Not all product changes are available online; if you don't see your target card listed, call instead.
Timeline: Changes typically process within 1-3 business days. The new annual fee is prorated from the change date.
Pro tips before downgrading
1. Use your Global Entry / TSA PreCheck credit first. The $100 Global Entry credit is available once every 4.5 years. If you haven't used it and your existing Global Entry or PreCheck is expiring, apply for renewal before downgrading. The credit won't be available on the Gold or Green.
2. Use the Fine Hotels + Resorts credit if you have a stay coming. FHR properties offer breakfast for two, room upgrades, and late checkout. If you have a hotel trip planned, book it through Amex Travel on FHR before downgrading to use the $200 credit.
3. Confirm your Centurion Lounge access ends immediately. Your Centurion access ends the day your card is changed. If you have flights in the next few weeks through a Centurion airport, time your downgrade after those flights.
4. Don't downgrade to avoid the annual fee before the anniversary. Amex charges the full annual fee on the anniversary date and may prorate a refund if you downgrade afterward. The most efficient timing is to downgrade shortly after your annual fee posts — not 11 months early.
5. Keep at least one MR-earning card active. If the Platinum is your only MR-earning card and you downgrade to a no-fee EveryDay (which still earns MR), your points are safe. But if you close ALL MR cards, your points are forfeited within 30 days. Downgrading to Gold or Green keeps your points active indefinitely.
The fee math after downgrading
| Scenario | Annual fee | Credits available | Effective net fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Platinum | $895 | $1,200+ | -$305+ (at full use) |
| Downgrade to Gold | $325 | $240 | $85 (at full use) |
| Downgrade to Green | $150 | $200 | -$50 (at full use) |
| Cancel entirely | $0 | $0 | $0 (but lose account history + MR) |
The Gold is the sweet spot for most former-Platinum holders who actively dine out and use Uber. The Green is better for occasional travelers who want minimal annual fee commitment but still want MR points.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my Amex Membership Rewards points if I downgrade the Platinum?
No — as long as you downgrade to another MR-earning card (Gold, Green, or EveryDay). Your points stay in your Membership Rewards account and remain fully transferable to airline and hotel partners. Points are only forfeited if you cancel ALL MR-earning cards with no active MR card remaining.
Can I upgrade back to the Amex Platinum after downgrading?
Yes. You can request an upgrade back to the Platinum at any time after your account has been at the lower tier for at least 12 months (Amex's standard product-change waiting period). However, upgrading back does NOT earn you a new welcome bonus — the Amex once-per-lifetime rule means the Platinum SUB is permanently locked if you earned it previously.
How long does the Amex product change take?
The product change typically processes within 1-3 business days. You'll receive a confirmation and a new card arrives within 7-10 business days. Your old Platinum card stops working when the new Gold or Green card activates. Benefits change immediately upon processing — Centurion Lounge access ends the day the change is made.
