How to Earn Amex Membership Rewards Points Fast in 2026

Quick Answer

Earn Membership Rewards fastest with once-per-lifetime welcome offers on cards the pop-up clears you for, then route spending to the right multiplier: 4x on restaurants and U.S. supermarkets on the Amex Gold, 5x on flights on the Platinum, 4x on your top two business categories on the Business Gold, and 2x on everything else on the no-fee Blue Business Plus. Add Rakuten paid in points at 100 per $1 of cash back, Amex Offers, and up to five referral bonuses per card per calendar year. A normal household reaches 300,000 points in a year without buying anything extra.

A household that puts its ordinary spending on the right two or three Amex cards earns 150,000-250,000 Membership Rewards points a year before a single welcome offer — and the welcome offers, each available once per lifetime, add another 100,000-300,000 in the first year. The trick is not a trick. It is putting groceries and restaurants on a 4x card, flights on a 5x card, everything else on a 2x card, routing online shopping through Rakuten for points instead of cash, and never applying through a pop-up.

This guide ranks every legitimate way to earn Membership Rewards by how many points it actually produces for a normal household, with the caps and rules that limit each one, then builds a 12-month plan that lands above 300,000 points without buying anything you would not have bought.

Quick answer

The fastest Membership Rewards come from welcome offers on cards you qualify for, then from category multipliers on spending you already do: 4x at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets on the Amex Gold, 5x on flights on the Amex Platinum, 4x on your two biggest business categories on the Amex Business Gold, and 2x on everything else on the Blue Business Plus. Layer Rakuten set to Membership Rewards (100 points per $1 of cash back), Amex Offers, and up to five referral bonuses per card per calendar year on top. Avoid the two things that do not work: manufactured spending, which Amex claws back, and applying through a pop-up, which forfeits the bonus.

  • Biggest single source: welcome offers — once per lifetime per card, so wait for a strong one
  • Biggest recurring source: 4x on groceries and dining (Gold) and 5x on flights (Platinum)
  • The floor for everything else: 2x on the no-fee Blue Business Plus, up to $50,000 a year
  • Free points on top: Rakuten at 100 MR per $1 of cash back, Amex Offers, referrals (5 per card per year)
  • Does not work: gift-card churning, speculative applications, points from a card you applied for through a pop-up

💡 Pro tip — Switch Rakuten from cash back to Membership Rewards once and forget it. A 10% cash-back store becomes 10 Membership Rewards points per dollar, which is double the Platinum's best category, on a purchase you were making anyway. New Rakuten members currently get a bonus of $50 or 5,000 Amex points after their first qualifying purchases.

Key takeaway: welcome offers are the sprint, multipliers are the marathon. A household that runs both in the same year finishes with 300,000-plus points; one that only chases offers runs out of cards, and one that only uses multipliers leaves the fastest 100,000 on the table.

1. Welcome offers, and the rules that gate them

Nothing else produces 100,000 points in three months. Two constraints shape how you use them:

  • Once per lifetime. Each Amex card pays its welcome offer once. Wait for a strong offer — the Gold's is currently 100,000 points after $8,000 in 6 months, the Platinum's 175,000 points after $12,000 in 6 months, and Platinum offers are often personalized. The once-per-lifetime guide covers when a bigger offer is worth waiting for.
  • The pop-up. Amex tells you before the hard pull if you are not eligible for the bonus. Apply through it and you get the card, the fee, and no points. The Amex application rules guide covers the pop-up, the 2-in-90 rule, and the card limits.

Meet the spending requirement on real expenses — groceries, insurance premiums, utilities, tuition, a tax payment if the processor fee is small next to the bonus — and never on gift cards or cash equivalents, which Amex can exclude from the requirement or claw back. The minimum spend strategy guide has the honest playbook.

2. The multipliers: put each dollar on its best card

Groceries with no annual feeAmex EveryDay2xUp to $6,000 a year, plus a 20% points bonus in any billing period with 20 or more transactions

Two rules make the table work. First, the cards pool: every Membership Rewards card you hold links to one account, so the Gold's dining points and the Blue Business Plus's 2x land in the same balance. Second, the 2x floor matters more than it looks: a household with $30,000 of uncategorized spending earns 60,000 points a year on the Blue Business Plus and 30,000 on a 1x card. The Amex Trifecta and Amex Quadfecta are the standard two- and three-card setups built on this table.

3. Rakuten: the highest earning rate most cardholders never turn on

Rakuten is a shopping portal that pays cash back for starting an online purchase from its site or app. Eligible Amex cardholders can choose to be paid in Membership Rewards instead, at 100 points for every $1 of cash back. A 5% cash-back store becomes 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar; a 10% store becomes 10 points per dollar — on top of whatever the card itself earns. Because store rates change daily and rise around sales, a household that buys clothing, electronics, and travel online routinely adds 5,000-25,000 points a year with no change in what it buys. The Rakuten and Bilt points guide covers the setup and the stores that pay most.

4. Referrals: five per card per year

Every Amex card has a referral link in the app; when someone applies through it and is approved, you earn a bonus. Since April 8, 2026, each card can pay at most five referral bonuses per calendar year, and the amount varies by card and by offer — Platinum and Gold referrals are the largest. The useful version is a household or a group of friends who were going to apply anyway: two partners each holding a Gold and a Platinum can refer each other's next cards and keep every bonus inside the household.

5. Amex Offers: check the app monthly

Amex Offers are targeted merchant deals — "spend $100, get 2,000 points" or "spend $50, get $10 back" — that appear in the app for each card. They must be added to the card before the purchase, they are per card (so a household with three cards sees three sets), and the points versions stack with the card's own multiplier. The Amex Offers strategy guide covers how to find and stack them.

6. Business cards: employee cards and the 2x tier

For anyone with business spending, two more levers:

  • Employee cards on the Blue Business Plus and Amex Business Gold are free and earn at the card's rates, so staff spending that used to sit on a 1x corporate card earns 2x or 4x into your account.
  • The Business Platinum 2x tier — 2x on any purchase of $5,000 or more and on construction, electronics, software and cloud, and shipping, up to $2 million a year — turns large invoices into 10,000-plus points each. The employee cards strategy guide and Amex Platinum vs Business Platinum cover both.

The 12-month plan: 300,000 points on ordinary spending

A two-adult household with $6,000 of grocery spending, $8,000 of dining, $5,000 of flights, $1,500 of prepaid hotels, $30,000 of other spending including a side business, and $4,000 of online shopping through Rakuten stores averaging 5% back:

MonthMovePoints
1Open the Amex Gold (pop-up clear); enroll credits; set Rakuten to Membership RewardsWelcome offer of 100,000 after $8,000 of ordinary spending
1-12Groceries and dining on the Gold($6,000 + $8,000) × 4 = 56,000
4Open the Blue Business Plus for the side business and all uncategorized spending($30,000 × 2) = 60,000 over the year
6Partner opens a Amex Platinum through your referral before a trip that uses the hotel and airline creditsReferral bonus to you; welcome offer of 175,000 to them
6-12Flights and prepaid hotels on the Platinum($5,000 + $1,500) × 5 = 32,500
1-12Rakuten in points$4,000 × 5% × 100 = 20,000
1-12Amex Offers across three cardsabout 8,000

Recurring earn: roughly 176,000 points a year. Add two welcome offers and a referral in year one and the household clears 300,000 Membership Rewards — worth $3,000 at the Amex Travel floor and $6,000 or more transferred to partners at 2 cents, per the Amex Membership Rewards transfer partners guide. Fees: $325 for the Gold, $895 for the Platinum, $0 for the Blue Business Plus, against $240 of Gold credits and $2,000-plus of Platinum credits the household was spending on anyway.

What does not work

  1. Manufactured spending. Buying gift cards, money orders, or cash equivalents to hit a welcome offer or farm 4x at supermarkets is the fastest way to a clawback and a closed account. Amex reserves the right to exclude those purchases from bonus categories and to reverse points on spending it deems not genuine.
  2. Applying through a pop-up. The card arrives, the fee posts, the bonus never does.
  3. Chasing every welcome offer. Once per lifetime means a small offer taken today is the offer you got forever. Wait for a strong one.
  4. Paying for a card whose multiplier you do not use. A Platinum for someone who flies twice a year earns 5x on $800 of flights — 4,000 points for $895.
  5. Leaving Rakuten on cash back. $100 of cash back is 10,000 points at the flip of a setting, worth $200 or more transferred.
  6. Forgetting caps. The Gold's supermarket 4x stops at $25,000 a year, the Blue Business Plus's 2x at $50,000; above those, move the spending to the next-best card.

Real use case: a couple that doubled their balance without a new card

A couple holding a Gold and a Blue Business Plus earned about 70,000 Membership Rewards in 2025 and assumed the next 70,000 needed another card. Three changes in 2026:

  • Rakuten switched to Membership Rewards on their existing online shopping — clothing, a laptop, two hotel bookings through a portal store at 8-12% — added 23,000 points.
  • Groceries moved from a 2% cash-back card to the Gold, where they had been putting only restaurants: $7,200 of supermarket spending at 4x added 28,800 points that used to be $144 of cash.
  • A referral for a friend's Platinum, applied through their link, added a bonus; a second friend's Gold added another.

Result: about 145,000 points on the same two cards and the same spending — worth $2,900 or more at 2 cents — with zero new annual fees. The card they eventually added, a Platinum in October, came with a welcome offer that took them past 300,000 for the year.

Editor's take

Membership Rewards rewards boring behavior: the right card for each grocery run, a portal you start every online purchase from, and patience with welcome offers you can only earn once. We rate the Gold's 4x on supermarkets and restaurants as the single best recurring earn in the program for a household, the Blue Business Plus as the most underrated card in it, and Rakuten-to-points as the most underused setting. What we would tell anyone chasing "fast" is that the fastest legitimate 300,000 points take about a year and cost two annual fees whose credits you were going to spend anyway. The people who try to do it in three months with gift cards end up with a closed account and a story.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to earn Amex Membership Rewards points?
A welcome offer: 100,000 or more points in about three months of ordinary spending, available once per lifetime per card and only if the pop-up clears you. After that, the fastest recurring earn is the Gold's 4x on restaurants and U.S. supermarkets and the Platinum's 5x on flights, with the Blue Business Plus covering everything else at 2x. Rakuten set to Membership Rewards adds 5-10 points per dollar on online shopping you were doing anyway.
How does Rakuten pay Amex Membership Rewards points?
In your Rakuten account settings, eligible Amex cardholders can choose Membership Rewards instead of cash back; every $1 of cash back you would have earned becomes 100 points. Start each online purchase from the Rakuten site or app, pay with any card, and the points post to your Membership Rewards account on Rakuten's quarterly schedule. A 10% store pays 10 points per dollar on top of what the card itself earns.
How many Amex referral bonuses can I earn per year?
Since April 8, 2026, each Amex card you hold can pay a referral bonus at most five times per calendar year. The bonus amount depends on the card and the current referral offer; Platinum and Gold referrals are typically the largest. Referrals made earlier in 2026 did not count toward the new limit. Two people in a household can still refer each other for each new card.
Can I buy gift cards to earn Amex points faster?
It is the one strategy we recommend against. Amex's terms allow it to exclude gift cards and cash equivalents from bonus categories and from welcome-offer spending, and to claw back points on purchases it judges not to be genuine spending; accounts have been closed over it. Every other source in this guide — multipliers, Rakuten, referrals, Amex Offers — earns the same points on spending you were going to do anyway, with no risk to the account.
Which Amex card earns the most points on everyday spending?
For a household, the Amex Gold: 4x at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 a year) and 4x at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 a year) cover the two largest everyday categories for most people. For spending with no bonus category, the no-fee Blue Business Plus at 2x on everything up to $50,000 a year beats every 1x card in the program, and any self-employment income qualifies you for it.
